The last 6 weeks has seen a number of achievements and milestones observed in the domain name industry throughout the world.
On 7 April 1994, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) added the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) .RU into its core database.
According to Coordination Center for TLD .RU, the administrator of the .ru domain space, the 17 year old registry now has over 3,000,000 domain names under management and ranks 6th in the world for ccTLDs, achieving one of the highest growth rates among the larger ccTLDs – 23% annually. Last year, the .ru extension gained a Cyrillic internationalised domain name counterpart, .РФ
Elsewhere, EURid, the .eu top-level domain registry, celebrated the domain’s fifth birthday last week and announced .eu domain name registrations have doubled in five years. EURid says .eu is now the the ninth largest TLD in the world. Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France and Poland are noted as .eu’s largest markets.
Other recent notable domain name milestones around the world include an announcement in early March form ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR), that .org registration had reached 9 million. With a growth of 10.3 percent in 2010, the space continues to be the third largest generic Top Level Domain (gTLD).
