The Australian government has voiced its objections to ICM Registry's proposal to create a .XXX TLD, saying that "ICANN has an obligation to act in the interests of the wider community" and the introduction of .XXX lacks an "identified public interest."

The letter to ICANN comes from the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, saying he understands the proposal will be considered at the next ICANN board meeting on 28 October, with consideration to be given as to "whether the proposed contract with ICM is consistent with previous Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) advice, and whether or not further consultation with the GAC is required."

The letter also notes that "given the history of governmental concern about the public policy implications of .XXX and the substantive changes from the previous proposed contract with ICM, [Conroy] urges the Board to seek GAC advice on the Revised Proposed Registry Agreement with ICM."
